What is Reiki Energy Healing

What is Reiki and how does it work

Have you ever heard of bioenergetic medicine? No? Well, it refers to the manipulation of bioenergetic fluxes to positively affect health. Bioenergetic therapy is used for healing physical and emotional trauma in the human body resulting in homeostasis. It is applied to those who suffer from anxiety, stress, phobias, obsessive disorder, shyness, or insecurity. It can help with chronic pain and muscle spasms, and some forms of bioenergetics medicine are moving from laboratories to clinics.

Laying on Hands is something that has been prevalent in the eastern world and has had an influence on every religion that has been founded upon the belief in a higher power. Even in the Christian Bible, there are passages about the gift of Laying on Hands.

So, what does this have to do with Reiki? Similarly, Reiki is a healing technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient using touch, to activate the natural healing processes of the patient's body and restore physical and emotional well-being. Rediscovered by Mikao Usui in the 1920s. The word Reiki is the combination of two Japanese words "Rei" and "Ki" meaning universal energy and the method is passed from master to student who is attuned or opened to the Reiki energy. There are various levels of attunements a practitioner can receive on their journey to that of a Reiki Master and teacher. Each level (Level I, II, III, and Master) amplifies the practitioner's channeling of energy and their abilities to provide healing.

Reiki therapy is based on an Eastern belief that vital energy flows through your body. The idea is that a Reiki practitioner uses gentle touch -- or places their hands on or just above your body -- to help guide this energy in a way that promotes balance and healing.

I have received my Reiki Master attunement. I use Reiki on myself and my loved ones daily. Reiki is an exceptionally relaxing healing modality that will help you to find clarity, relieve pain, relieve stress and anxiety, help you to sleep better (my kids love bedtime Reiki) and so much more.

So, if you’ve heard about Reiki, but have no clue what it's about. Here is all you need to know to ready yourself for your first session.

What happens during Reiki

Reiki treatments typically last about 60 to 90 minutes. During a session, you'll lie on a massage table fully clothed, as your Reiki practitioner gently places their hands, palms down, on or just above your body in specific energy locations. Sessions can be shorter too like 15 to 30 minutes if we’re not addressing major concerns. For a short session, you can sit in a chair. We use a series of 12 to 22 different hand positions to direct the flow of energy. In some Reiki sessions, I will also cleanse your aura and/or balance your chakras (energy centers).

What happens during distance Reiki

Since energy transcends space and time, Reiki can be performed by practitioners who are attuned to do so. Along with your practitioner, you will select a date and time on which to have the treatment. The practitioner will prepare their space for your session as they would for an in-person session. You will be guided to prepare, which typically includes sitting or laying in a quiet space, burning a candle, and listening to meditation music, for the duration of the session. Each practitioner will approach this differently. Depending on the duration of the session, I could include chakra cleansing and balancing, and an oracle card reading if I am guided to do so.

What does Reiki feel like

The experience of Reiki is subjective, changeable, and sometimes very subtle. People often experience heat in the practitioner's hands, but sometimes the practitioner's hands feel refreshingly cool. In some instances, you may feel nothing at all, but Reiki is always working even well after the session. Even in distance sessions, you could feel your heart rate increase, yawn, sneeze, cough, burp, or even pass gas out your bottom. You could hear a tummy rumble or feel warm or cold sensations in certain areas of your body. You may very well fall right off to sleep thanks to its calming effects.

The 5 principles of Reiki

As a Reiki Practitioner, the 5 principles of Reiki are like a vow that we take and are principles we live by. It helps me to remain present in my practice, especially when life is happening to me and I feel a bit off-center.

The 5 Reiki principles:

Just for today, I will not anger.

Just for today, I will let go of worry.

Just for today, I will do my work honestly.

Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.

Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbour and every living thing.

Just for today, I will honour my teachings.

How long do the effects of Reiki last

This question is relative to the need for Reiki. For example, if you are ill with flu or a cold, it would be beneficial to have Reiki a few times per day for short periods. The energy helps relieve pain, alleviate symptoms, will relax you so that you can sleep, and strengthens your immune system so it can function more effectively.

However, if you need treatment for severe or chronic issues, I suggest a series of treatments in close proximity. Three treatments in week one, two treatments in week two followed by once a week until improvements are significant. This tends to effectively set in motion a healing process that has a cumulative effect each time. The close proximity of the sessions helps create a strong healing effect that has a lasting impact.

There are of course instances when you need to simply deal with clearing a foggy brain, manage stress, heal a sore wrist or recover from a strained muscle thanks to a hectic gym session. One session could be enough to last for a few weeks.

What should I know I so before my first Reiki session

Relax and reflect. Give yourself at least 30 minutes before the session to sit and reflect.

Eat and hydrate. You'll want to be sure you've eaten and hydrated a few hours before the session (at most two)—mostly so you will be comfortable and not distracted by hunger or thirst.

Get comfortable.

Preparing for Your Reiki Session

It is suggested to refrain from caffeine, sugar, or alcohol at least three hours before a session. If you are receiving a remote session, refrain from these things during the session as well. Avoid having a heavy meal before a session.

Do you take your clothes off for Reiki

You can wear whatever clothes you like. I often opt for workout clothes or something I can fall asleep in. Most people remove their shoes. You remain fully clothed during the treatment.
