What is TRE?

Let's dive into the science behind TRE®, starting with its creator, Dr David Bercelli, an international expert in trauma intervention and conflict resolution. Dr Bercelli created this practice to release deep tension created in the body during a traumatic experience or through chronic stress.


TRE® has been designed as a self-help tool and through a simple set of exercises to fatigue the lower half of the body, our natural shaking mechanism is activated. This shaking mechanism releases deep muscular tension, encourages the body to return to its state of harmony, and promotes a sense of calm, peace and groundedness.


So not only will you release stress, anxiety and trauma from your body, you will never have to relive any of these traumatic experiences. Why? Because this practice does not require you to talk about about anything, it simply requires you to allow your body to do what it was naturally designed to do - to shake off the stress and return your body to peace. Your nervous system will thank you!


What happens in a TRE® session?


A facilitated session with a certified TRE® provider helps you to understand the process and deepen your connection with yourself. The session can be between 60 to 90mins. Further to medical screening and an explanation of self-regulation protocol, the provider will lead you through seven exercises aimed at fatiguing specific muscles within the lower region of your body on your feet or in a seated position depending on your physical ability.


These exercises are simple and easy to learn for your own personal practice. The exercises should not be painful or cause discomfort but will activate your psoas muscle situated in your pelvis which is the muscle that will invoke the tremor. You’ll then lie down on the floor where your body will be engaged for the tremor. As we are all unique beings, the process will be different for everyone, just like every one of your sessions will be different as the tremor is intuitive and will move where it should, in its time. The sensation may seem strange at first when you experience your body moving on its own, but you will soon adjust and will be fully in control of the pace and can self-regulate at any time.


You can tremor between 5mins to 20mins, followed by a few minutes of integration, and end with a gentle check-out to end your session. By the end of your session, you should feel calm and grounded.

You! Since this shaking mechanism in the muscles is part of our natural behaviour as humans, everyone can benefit from TRE®. This shaking of the muscles increases the resiliency of the body because it causes deep relaxation that naturally reduces stress levels. It can release emotions ranging from mild upset to severe anxiety whether it is caused by work stress, excessive worry, conflict in relationships, physical stresses, or traumas from accidents.
